End of 2011

In a couple of days, we will be entering the new year 2012.

I would like to take the opportunity here to give everyone here my best wishes for the coming year.

I haven’t been writing much for the past couple of weeks, partly because of the holiday season, and partly because I was trying to clear up some year end work.

I would like to end off the year by sharing with you this quote from Warren Buffett:

“Only buy something that you’d be perfectly happy to hold if the market shut down for 10 years.”

Site Migration Completed

The first phrase of the migration from my previous site, Den of the Lion Investor (lioninvestor.com), has been completed.

I have called the new site Martin Lee @ Sg.

For now, most of the content should be fully accessible but I will probably need more time to add in some of the other functions.

If you find any bugs or have any suggestions on how this new site can be better, do let me know.

Emeritus Lion Investor

When I created this site back in March 2008, the first step involved was thinking of a suitable domain name.

The name had to be something that was relevant to the topics in the site. I decided against using my name as it would not be immediately clear to people what the site was about.

I wanted to use a pen name like Mr Brown, which would make it easy for people to remember.

Of course, whatever name I ultimately decide to use had to be also available.

So I was toying around with ______ investor. Tried a few combinations before finally drawing some inspiration from Temasek Holdings. What other word could I use to signify Singapore? Temasek. Lion City. The word lion of course!

Did a check and found lioninvestor available. Which was quite a rarity as it was a two word domain. And so, that’s how the site started. An investor in Singapore is what I am and that makes it a perfect match.

It’s with mixed feelings today that I announce a rebranding and migration of the entire site.

There will not be any new posts over the next few days as I will be busy migrating the site over to a new domain. The new site will be at www.martinlee.sg.

The whole process is quite tedious as I will need to migrate not only the site, but also the facebook, twitter and feedburner account.

Not to mention my emails, contacts, calendar and hundreds of documents that I have linked to this existing domain name using Google applications. I will not be able to migrate a couple of things like my task lists and chat history and I have yet to find a way around that.

To top it off, this email account is also the primary account on my android phone so I will need to do a factory reset on my handphone that will erase all my handphone data and applications. And then re-install them again.

Sorry for the rant. :(

But for you my readers, the entire process will be quite seamless. There will be minimum downtime (if any) and if you go to a link on this domain, you will automatically be routed over to the correct page on the new site once it is up. All the existing posts and comments will still be there and you can continue to post your comments.

If you have an existing email or feed subscription, you can continue to use that but I would prefer that you subscribe to the new feed address here.

My new facebook page will be here: Martin Lee. Please do “like” it and continue to support my work.

I would also like to request that if you have a link to my site, kindly update it to reflect the new domain name. You will just need to change your old link from www.lioninvestor.com/article-name to www.martinlee.sg/article-name. However, please do so only from next week when the new site is ready.

And so, I’m signing off here for the last time as Emeritus Lion Investor.

See you over at the new site next week!

Den of the Lion Investor Thanks You For Your Support

This blog Den of the Lion Investor was started by me back in March 2008 as an avenue for me to communicate my personal thoughts on the area of personal finance and other related items to the public.

I had a personal target of putting up one article each day (except for weekends and public holidays). Obviously, this takes up a considerable amount of my time.

Sometimes, I’m able to write longer articles of better quality. When you provide useful information, people tend to share them with their friends or on other websites. As a result, I get a fair bit of links and referral traffic. If you have been one of these people who have shared my site, I would like to thank you and hope you will continue to do so.

Obviously, writing a long article every day is not practical as I do have other commitments. So on those days when I have limited time, I make do with a short post of a newsworthy article or event. I was actually overseas for two weeks in April/May 2011 but you probably wouldn’t have known from the (same) frequency of articles during that period.

Throughout the past few years, readership has grown steadily. There are now more than 2000 readers who are either subscribed to my daily email updates or through their feedreader. A few people even asked me whether they needed to pay for the updates. The answer was no then and it continues to be no now, as well as in the future.

As of today, I have had more than 1.5 million page views in total on this site. Traffic spiked significantly during the Global Financial Crisis as I was one of the few sites provided comprehensive information on the Minibonds. The post What Will Happen to my Lehman Minibond attracted more than 60,000 page views with 900+ comments. I was also quoted a few times on the Minibond issue in the media.

Another area of considerable interest are gold related topics. These has attracted more than 100,000 views over 3000 comments. I am glad to be able to provide a common platform for people to discuss about their investments.

Some people just read the articles and do not know much about the writer (ie me). For this, you can refer to the “ About” page, which is a short writeup about this site and myself.

I think it would be quite clear from that page that this site is not related to the fund management company Lion Global Investors. Probably some of you who do not invest into funds might not even have heard of them. They were formerly known as Lion Capital but changed their name to Lion Global Investors in June 2008, three months after this site was set up.

For the avoidance of doubt, I would like to state this clearly:

This site (and I) does not represent Lion Global Investors in any way. We are not officially affiliated. The only linkage I have with them is that I (as do some of my clients) invest in some of their funds.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope to continue to have your support in the future.

Den of Lion Investor is Now Mobile Friendly

If you have the experience of surfing the internet on your mobile phone, you will realize that the majority of the sites look the same whether you view it on your computer or on the handphone.

Sometimes, this makes browsing on the small screen of the handphone a bit painful as you need to zoom in and out frequently to read the parts you are interested in.

I just spent some time configuring this Den of the Lion Investor site to be “mobile friendly”.

Navigation on the handphone is now very clean and there’s no need for you to zoom in and out anymore.

If you own a smartphone, visit the site on your handphone browser now and let me know what you think!

It took me quite some time to realize the need to have a site that looks differently on the handphone. Coupled with the fact that the smartphone penetration in Singapore is one of the highest in the world, this improvement is a must.

Well, I suppose better late than never. :)
