Rules on Private School Adverts Should be Applied to Investment Seminars

The letter below was submitted to ST Forum on 12 April 2012 and was published on 17 April 2012.

It is heartening to see that the rules on advertising by private schools are being tightened (“Clearer rules on private school adverts” ; Wednesday).

One of the new requirements includes a full disclosure on the identity of people giving testimonials.

However, there exists a big gap in the lack of regulation for advertisements promoting trading seminars or courses.

These often contain unverifiable claims or testimonials.

Given that these courses could have a much greater financial impact on those who attend, I hope a similar advertising code of conduct can be enforced onto them.

Added : False advertising on investment schemes will be looked into.
